Speaker 1:

Welcome to Living In Purpose On Purpose. I'm your host, jamie Hensel, and welcome to my podcast. What's up everybody? It's your girl, jamie Hensel. Welcome back to my podcast. Welcome back to Living In Purpose On Purpose.

Speaker 1:

We are here in season 18, episode 1, and your girl is ready, okay, but I wanted to give some shout outs first. First, I wanted to shout out all my returning listeners. If you've been rocking with me from the beginning, from the middle, from the in between, whatever, thank you so much for supporting me and tuning in again. It's definitely appreciated and I don't want you to feel unnoticed Now. If you are a new listener, I appreciate you too. Thank you so much for giving my podcast a try and I hope you find something that educate you. Maybe it's funny you can relate to. Whatever the case may be, I hope you find something that you can take away, that you can start implying into your life and applying it to your future. Whatever you want to do, I hope that it's going to be something that you can really take away from this episode. Now I want to get straight into it because I'm excited. Y'all. I'm excited about this episode because it spoke to me. Y'all know, since the beginning I told y'all I speak to myself before I speak to anybody. So, yeah, I'm speaking on the podcast, talking to you guys, the listeners, but at the end of the day I am talking to myself overall.

Speaker 1:

So today we're talking about success and what it really takes to get to a successful place in your life. Now I do feel like success is not a one size fits all kind of situation and I feel like a lot of times we make it that way, society hasn't made it that way. We say, oh, to be successful means you gotta have a lot of money and you gotta be living in this type of house, driving these type of cars, and you need to look this certain way, you need to wear certain things, and I feel like that is everything except the truth. There's so many more things that goes into being successful and what it really means, and honestly, it looks different for everyone. So even when I'm gonna say today you may not resonate with everything and you may pull from some of them, and that's only because success is not a one size fits all, success is something that everyone looks at differently, everyone defines differently and everyone achieves it differently. But of course it's around my podcast.

Speaker 1:

I'm gonna give you nine key points today of what it means to be successful or how to be successful. So the first thing is first, I wanna let you know that you have to set clear goals. Like, simply, you have to set very clear and intentional goals. The more clear your direction is, the more clear your purpose is, and the more clear your purpose is, you're more intentional with the choices that you make and you're able to focus your efforts more on what matters instead of wasting time. This is a major thing, especially with creators, because sometimes, if we're not easily like, if we're not focused enough to understand that we need to have a set goal or a clear goal, we'll just be like making content, putting it out cool and it could be doing well, but it's like to what end? Where are we trying to go? Where are we trying to get to? But if we're not making those set clear goals, we'll just make in this content, doing this work, and there's like no end result, like it's just that in the moment result. But everything we do, all the choices that we make, especially within our craft, especially as creators, entrepreneurs, whoever it needs to be intentional and it should work towards something. So you have to make sure you set those clear goals.

Speaker 1:

And, of course, we all know about vision boards and things like that, and I'm not opposed to that. I think they're really cool, whether it's digital or like an actual, tangible vision board that you can physically see, that's cool and all For me. I have to do a vision board daily, I kid you not. I have to envision myself every single day accomplishing certain things. So, of course, you have those long-term goals, which is cool, but I make daily goals for myself. I make monthly goals for myself, even weekly goals, quarterly goals. I make those goals because it keeps me on my toes, it keeps me re-evaluating what am I doing, why am I doing this? And it also helps get me a little bit inspired, because if you know who you're doing it for and what you're doing it for consistently, it makes you go harder. But if you low-key, like, forget what you're saying or what you're doing it for, you're like, wow, like, why am I doing this? So it's so important that we understand that we have to set clear goals.

Speaker 1:

So, if we go to number two, you have to be hard-working and determined, and I had a podcast about this or an episode about this, I don't even know way at the beginning. But you have to be hard-working. My thing is, I love being the hardest worker in the room. I love somebody saying like, wow, you work really hard. You seem so determined and that's the top tier compliment for me. Like, forget everything else. I love when people call me talented and things like that. But when you call me hard-working, when you call me determined okay, girl, like you're my best friend because, wow, that's so important for me those are the two things that are not sold to you automatically.

Speaker 1:

When you say you want to be successful Like when you say, oh, I want to be successful, those two things don't just say, oh, let me attach myself because this comes with the territory. No, that's not how it works. Hard work and determination does not come to you easily just because you say you want to be successful. That's not how that works. It requires you to be dedicated, it requires you to be disciplined and you got to be willing to put in the necessary effort to overcome any type of obstacles and achieve all your objectives, because if you're not, you're not, I mean you're not getting anywhere. You're not gonna get anywhere with being successful. At least you maybe run around the cute little circle. But if you don't have those things Established, you don't have those things like that you're physically working on because I'm not gonna say it's gonna come overnight but if you're not working on those things consistently to make yourself hard working and Determined to be successful, you won't be ever. You literally won't ever be successful.

Speaker 1:

And I can say that 100%, without a shadow, without there's nobody that is successful, that did not put in hard work and that was not determined. So that's like the number one thing. I mean I know it's number two on this list, but it's it's top two, not two, but it is two in this situation. But aside from being hard-working and determined, you also got to be like a continual learner and you have to always want to improve yourself. If you don't want to improve yourself, like sweetheart, I'm telling you right now like it's not gonna work. It is not gonna work because every day should be a you versus you situation and you want to grow and evolve over and over and over every day. Even sometimes within one day, I'm like, okay, that was a cool post that I did is going well, the engagement is high, it's whatever. But how can I do better? Like what should I put into my next one? What other content should I put out for my next one? And that's just who I am as a person. But it's because I want success very badly and even though I have Reached success so far, but the higher success that I want to reach requires me to continuously Learn and improve myself.

Speaker 1:

The successful people commit their lives to becoming better through, like, lifelong learning, their entire life. They're constantly learning and evolving and pushing themselves because times evolve, time goes on. Things change the way our society is now versus when it was five years ago, ten years ago, honestly, a year ago life has been so different. Let's talk about the pandemic. Ever since the pandemic, lots of things have changed, even for content creators or Entrepreneurs in general. The way we do business and the way we Establish certain things for our companies and our businesses, our brands, is completely different from prior to the pandemic, and with that means People have to continually learn. If you are still stuck, look 2019, 2018 you're gonna live behind right now and good luck trying to be successful, because I don't see it happening, and that's just the truth of the matter.

Speaker 1:

You have to continually seek knowledge. You got to acquire new skills, adapt to your Circumstances, changing all the time. Like things are not always gonna be 100% beneficial for you all the time, so you have to be able to adapt to those things. Like you have to be open to feedback, understanding like and that's a part of learning like having people give you feedback and say, hey, like I noticed you watch my video, like what would you like about it? Cool, but isn't anything that you feel like maybe I could work on.

Speaker 1:

And a lot of times we are kind of prideful because we feel like we got it all together and we really don't. But we just ask it's just a simple question and people you know you just say hey, like be honest with me, like this is just to Honestly make me level up to be successful. And people would appreciate that and people will respect that and I would hope that they would give you, if they care about you, they would give you honest feedback. And it's not that something is always gonna be wrong, but if they give you that feedback, take that, learn from it, improve yourself, because you're Intentionally and consistently striving to improve yourself. So successful people are always trying to improve themselves and they're always trying to learn. That's the main thing.

Speaker 1:

So those top three setting your clear goals, being hardworking and determined and actually wanting to learn continuously and improve yourself. Those are the top three, right there, boo, the top three. So if you don't write nothing else down, make sure you write that down, because that's what it is and that's just what I've learned to love in this journey. I have learned to set those clear goals, even if my dreams and my goals I don't like dreams, I feel like dreams aren't attainable. But, um, I've learned to set those clear goals and it has helped me a lot because it helps me with my crazy brain that's always thinking of the next best thing. It helps me really hone in on what I really want to do and what change I really want to make in the world. But within that, continuously learning has evolved my knowledge so much in what I do and what I love about continually learning.

Speaker 1:

It does not only improve myself, like this point is, but it also helps me help other people, and that's what it's all about, like, I want to help the next person. If you want to start doing content creation, um, a beauty, influencing photography, whatever it is, podcasting, whatever it is I want to be able to assist and help you with that, because I mean, that's just who I am as a person and I really feel like we are put on this earth not only for our cells but for other people, to help other people. So the things that we go through is obviously not necessarily for ourselves. We already experienced it, we already went through it. It's for the next person, so they don't have to go through the same trouble or problems that you did. And even if they do, it may not be easy but it'd be simpler for them.

Speaker 1:

And then, lastly, obviously, you know, like I said, we just have to understand that we have to consistently do these things, we have to consistently strive for these things. So sometimes it's a little bit easier said than done, but I'm just trying to encourage you today to like just really listen to these points and really try to understand that this is a journey. This is not a sprint, this is a marathon. We are running the 5000 K, okay, like. This is not no quick, you know relay race. No, this is a marathon. This is a journey that we have to go on every single day. Every single day we have to wake up and say I want to run this journey, I'm going to run this marathon and I'm not going to rush it, I'm going to take my time.

Speaker 1:

And that goes to say my next point, number four you are resilient and you have to push to persevere, because if you don't and you give up too easily or too soon, you can miss your chance to be successful. You have to push to persevere in these moments where it's hard or the moments where it's difficult. Those are the times that things work out the best. You know, they say, pressure makes diamonds Like. The diamonds have to go through this intense heat and pressure for it to like, actually curate this beautiful diamond that we all have grown to love. So if a diamond is put through that much pressure, imagine what you have to go through to get to your success. And you may not always feel good, but you have to push to be resilient and push to persevere, because the minute that you do that, that's where the beauty comes out.

Speaker 1:

When we have setbacks, when we have challenges and even failures because they definitely will come, okay, they definitely. Failures is guaranteed, okay, that's the one thing in this journey. That's the 100% guaranteed is failing. And you're probably like Jamie, you're not convincing me to try to be successful. I mean it's no convincing. If you want to be successful, it doesn't matter what anybody say, that's what you're going to do and that's what it takes. That means pushing to persevere. You got to be able to be resilient and, no matter what happens, no matter what sitbacks with failures, you what the song say, dish yourself off and try again. That's what we need to do, because that's what's going to help us get to that next level. If we're constantly doing stuff that's comfortable for us, we're never going to make it anywhere else, never, Never.

Speaker 1:

You have to have that ability to bounce back from adversity and also try to maintain a positive mindset. I'm not saying that some days you're not going to be a little negative, nancy, and say I don't want to do this, no more, I don't want to do this. But it's just the overall matter of at the end of the day, even the days where you like I'm going to give up. You know, if you're like me, you just be talking. I'm like I ain't doing this, no more, no one dang on one. I'm going to wake up tomorrow and give it my all. It's just sometimes you're in that moment. But overall, you got to be able to bounce back from the adversity and bounce back and say, okay, I don't know what I was going through, I had to have a little snack. Now I got my positive mindset cap on and we're going to be successful. We're going to push through this. So we're halfway there, guys.

Speaker 1:

But number five is super easy and I literally have no points behind it because it's so self explanatory. But you understand passion and purpose in your life because, if you're like me, you understand that your passion and your purpose is not always the same and nine times out of 10, they're completely different. Now you can use one with the other to promote that balance in your life, but they're different for me. For me, my passion and what I love to do and what I'm purpose to do is two different things. Okay, and I feel like passion is linked to, like emotions and what you love and not say you can't love your purpose. But purpose is more of the technical thing, where it's like Okay is stuff, I don't really want to do this, but I'm purpose to do this, so I have to. There's no, there's no doubt I'm gonna get up and do this every single time because I have to, because this is what I told myself, this is my purpose. This is what I'm destined to do. So, with that being said, this is a non-negotiable. This is what I have to do, literally. So you have to understand that to be successful, you have to understand passion and Purpose.

Speaker 1:

Number six y'all we rolling, we rolling on, we rolling on. You got to build a strong network, you got to build a strong network, you got to build a strong network. I cannot say that enough, and a lot of times people do not want to do this Because they want to say I got it out the mud. Like you, just me myself and I. Like I ain't, I ain't getting on handouts, I ain't. Like why do people make it so bad that Someone can help you? Like what's so wrong with someone helping you? What's so wrong with? What's so wrong with Building a community of people around you that support you? Like what's so bad about that? Why do everyone want to get it out the mud? I can make it simpler for myself. Well, heck, yeah, sign me up if you want to calm face, time me and give me some points. Come on, call me if you want to text me an important to me, some knowledge of how to Whatever with my business, and come on like I don't want to get it out the mud. No, I don't. I don't want to get it out the mud, I want to get it out the grass. You know, like it's like still like in the dirt a little bit, so like you got the hard working, but it's like not too much where he's like dirty, like after, like it's just enough there. It's a balance, baby. It's a balance. Let me get it out the grass. I don't really want to get it out the mud, but you have to build that strong network Surrounding yourself is supportive and like-minded people.

Speaker 1:

People literally contribute to your success and that's why we you see, you watch the BT awards and you watch the Grammys and things like that. The first thing they do when they stand up there, of course, they usually thank God, but the first thing they do they start giving people their flowers. Thank you, john legend, for this and this, this. Thank you, like Beyonce, for helping me with this. Like they start thinking everybody connected to them. That help get them to where they were. It's not a one-person show and that right there shows you and these people are quote-unquote successful. That shows you like success comes with a village. It comes with a strong network of people around you that helps you Stay motivated, maybe maybe inspired. They give you knowledge, they give you wisdom, they mentor you, they give you their time, they give you their efforts, they give you their energy. Sometimes they give you their money, they Sponsor and support you financially. Like there's so many different people, that has different purposes in your network, but the whole point of the matter is building that network of mentors, advisors, collaborators. All of those people can literally provide you guidance, support and valuable opportunities.

Speaker 1:

I Cannot even tell you how many times where people have put me on to something and I'm like dang, that was dope, thank you. And I do the same thing. If I can plug somebody in that's connected to me, oh, I'm plugging. I'm plugging all the way. Plug in, turning on the lights, flickering the sound, like I'm doing everything that I can do to put people on the minute. Like, for instance, I've gotten interviewed a few times. Shout out to both, both journey magazine and canvas rebel. Those are two interviews that I've done so far. And Every time and they're asking, you're like oh, do you have anybody? I'm like plugging my people in.

Speaker 1:

Plugging my people in because it's super important. It's super important because the minute that we understand that it's all about Collaboration and not competition is where everybody can build a strong enough network for all of us to really kill it Like I mean kill it a lot we can be so successful, I. So building that strong, building that strong network is just key, like, I know it's number six on the list, but all of these keys are important, all of these points are important, but I would say building a strong network is what I'm doing right now. I'm in that building stage where I'm getting the people around me. That serves a purpose. They serve the relationship, they serve everything. That what it means to be me, and it doesn't necessarily mean, oh, what can they do for me, what can they do for me? No, it's not like that. It's just sometimes just having that supportive or a collaborative connection with people is just key or just important in general. So I feel like I'm in that building stage right now that I'm getting the people around me. That is meant to be there.

Speaker 1:

So when I make it, I made it and I know all my friends. Okay, I know all my friends. I think I got room for a few more right now, but for the most part, right now I know all my friends, like I know who's really there for me, who supports me continuously, and I don't even got to ask them Like I don't have to ask, like, oh, can you go check out this, can you share, can you like it? Can you, can you go support my podcast? Like can you leave a review? Like I don't have to do any of that, like it's like natural. Shout out to my best friend she does that all the time, like she'll just message me or like talk to me, and she's just like you know, wow, bestie, that you're doing your thing and I'm like thank you, girl. So shout out to Katie, best friend for a while, and like she's just really been supporting me a lot more here lately also with just everything, and I really appreciate it. So it's just that's an example of someone that's like connected to me. And that is not even about what she can do for me. It's just about that support and that mindset that oh, wow, jamie, like you're doing a great job, like keep doing what you're doing, like keep putting it out, and I'm just like, wow, that's really supportive and I love it. Now, going from that strong network, this is something that's also very important.

Speaker 1:

Number eight you have to display integrity and have ethical behavior. I feel like this is one thing or I guess, two things that we do not talk about a lot in the creator or like entrepreneurial world. We don't talk about integrity and ethical things like that. It's like a taboo and I think it's because in society where it's like cancel culture. So if you believe in a certain thing or if you do things a certain way and you're not as accepting or willing to do the things that other people are doing, people are like, oh, cancel, cancel. But nothing should come at the expense of your integrity. Literally nothing. Nothing should come at the expense of your integrity. That should be the number one thing that you're concerned about.

Speaker 1:

Number one when you treat others with respect and you may think that you're not, you have to respect and you maintain like a strong moral compass that actually builds trustworthy relationships. The minute that you start acting like you don't got no type of sense, you don't have no ethical type of foundation, you don't hold any integrity. How do you expect your relationships to be genuine? And you can't even be trustworthy yourself. You can't even be respectful, you can't even have any type of decorum, like. If you can't have these things like your relationships are not going to be successful, and we just spoke about how successful relationships breathe successful people. So if you're trying to be successful, sweetheart, this needs to be important for you. Number eight okay, have an integrity and holding that ethical behavior under yourself, that foundation, understanding that Now I just realized that's actually number eight, y'all, that's number seven, but we're going to keep it rolling. Okay, just wanted to put that out there. If you, if you're writing it down, you're like hold on, did she miss, did she miss a number? Did she? Yeah, I did, I did, okay. But now we're going to go to number eight.

Speaker 1:

You have to be able to adapt and have flexibility. I'm not going to tell you how many times I worked on projects and I'm like, okay, this changed and this changed and this changed. But you have to be quick on your feet. But even if you're just doing projects for yourself, sometimes life happens. Sometimes you have to adapt to.

Speaker 1:

If you have a family, like me I have two children, I have two sons and I have a nine month old and a four year old and anybody who have kids, or even if you don't have kids you just watched a child Children can be very unpredictable. So you can have a day where you have all this stuff planned and something can throw a wrench in it. You cannot be like I'm just, I'm not recording at all, I'm just not putting out the content, whatever it is what it is like, my day is ruined. No, you have to adapt to that. So you may not be able to do everything that you wanted to do, but you're able to do some things and that's good enough. And that's what it takes. It takes you being able to adapt and have flexibility.

Speaker 1:

Everything in this world is constantly changing, literally constantly changing. So you have to be able to open up new ideas, embrace the change, adjust your strategies when it's necessary, because if you don't do that, it'll help you stay. It's not going to help you at all, but if you do do that, it's going to help you stay relevant. You're going to be able to seize new opportunities, because you're easily to be like okay, cool, that's the vibe, cool, I'm adapt to that. I'm going to be flexible, because the minute that you show the world that that's who you are, while holding your integrity and your ethical behaviors, but once you show the world that, it's like, wow, what can't she do. That's just something about myself that I actually do love, like I Just I can adapt and it's just because I've been through a few things that just has shown me different things and different ways things can turn out. Then now I have that knowledge and that understanding where maybe the wisdom that when certain things change, I can adapt and have that flexibility.

Speaker 1:

I just have that mindset and that's just because, like I said, you go through enough stuff, you start to learn enough stuff. So some things only you, only you only understand, and you only go through it To find that information out. Like there's nothing that people can tell you. Because until you actually experience yourself, you can't really be quick on your feet about it, you can't adapt that well because You've never really been put in that spot. So even when people help you, even with this podcast, this episode, I'm telling you these things, I'm giving you stories, I'm giving you real-life situations, real life like Things within my mind that actually comes up. But until you experience it yourself and Until you're able to go through it, you're, you don't have that mental like diagnostic of what's going on. So until you have that, some things is only gonna come by Experiencing it and that's fine. But with experience you'll come into the knowledge of adapting and having that flexibility.

Speaker 1:

Now, this last one is hard for me, I'm not gonna lie. Number nine is difficult for me Because I'm a very logical person and I kind of want to know everything before I do it. And sometimes it's hard for me to Not know. And if I know too much I Will back out and say you know what? Maybe I can go with a safer option. But to be successful, you have to know how and when. You have to know how, in when, to take calculated risk.

Speaker 1:

I'm gonna say it again in order to be successful, you have to know how and when to take calculated risk. And I'm saying that because a lot of times we get stuck in our comfort zone. We are stuck, I'm you stuck, like Chuck. We are in this comfort zone. We're not ever coming out, but we expect to be successful and to evolve. How can you evolve somewhere where you're literally Capped out, like you're literally hitting the cap, hitting the cap, hitting the cap, you're not busting out of there at all.

Speaker 1:

So how do you expect for your success to supersede your comfort zone when you're stuck there? You have to get out of that, and the only way you can do that is taking risk. That means you have to have the ability to assess potential rewards and, like weigh them against the potential risk for a greater opportunity for growth. If you want to grow, you got to take these risk and these opportunities and say, okay, like, yeah, I got to pay $58 for this course but in turn, I'm gonna get knowledge that can make me thousands. Hmm, we do. I want to do so. I want to Spend the $58, which is like maybe just eating two meals at home instead of eating out and Gain thousands of dollars in the ladder in. Or don't want to just waste money on buying a few meals from chilies and Longhorn a couple meals and once I eat it and it's gone, it's gone. It's not making me any other type of money.

Speaker 1:
